Split Level House

We were commissioned to prepare a design for a terrace house located in Newtown, Sydney.  The brief was to completely renovate the terrace whilst opening the heart of the house up to natural daylight.

The original street frontage was retained and preserved, and the ageing masonry lean-to was dismantled.  Split-level floors were arranged around an open stair to amplify and expose each internal space to a void filled with daylight.  A centrally located light well directs light and ventilation to the two bedrooms, and both bathrooms, while lower-level louvres funnel fresh air into the laundry and storage spaces below ground.  Joinery rather than internal walls demarcate internal spaces, allowing, where possible a horizontal extension of space.
